Embutidos Ibargoyen Varela at MACA

Mar 29, 2026

There is something quietly magnetic about stories that emerge from the rural interior—where the everyday and the uncanny often sit side by side. This Sunday, Embutidos Ibargoyen Varela arrives at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry (MACA), offering a theatrical experience that moves between dark humor and emotional depth, carried by a compelling ensemble cast that includes our community member, Lucila Brea.

Set in a small Uruguayan town at the beginning of the 20th century, the play follows five women devoted to the craft of embutidos, whose fragile balance is disrupted when a virus wipes out their pigs. The unexpected arrival of a traveler begins to unravel tensions, desires, and buried truths, shaping a narrative where intimacy and strangeness unfold in equal measure. What emerges is a kind of staged banquet—at times grotesque, at times tender—that reflects on inheritance, repetition, and the invisible forces that shape a community.

Written and directed by Shumi Gauto and produced by Compañía Ordinaria, the piece brings together a cast of strong scenic presence—Shumi Gauto, Catalina Salas, Lucila Brea, María Solari, Ximena Perazzo, and Pietro Scalone—supported by a carefully crafted creative team, including original music by Joaquín Bachrach, art and costume design by Maru Di Fonzo, lighting by Emilio Pistone, and makeup by María Solari.
